Rant Of The Week – 13 Reasons Why, What Is The Big Deal ?

“13 Reasons Why” has been a global sucess ever since it was released last month. However its content has generated a lot of buzz and controversy all over the world. Some of it positive and some of it negative. Let’s see what is this all about.

Being a tv show developed by Netflix, it’s no wonder that it is another great tv series, nonetheless there were negative reviews on it, mainly due to its depiction on an issue that it is a reality on some teenagers.

Basically, the plot follows a teenager named Clay Jensen in his quest to uncover the story behind his classmate and crush, Hannah, and her decision to end her life. So, suicide is  main matter that this show displays. And, of course, this subject can undertake certain forms of controversy being mixed with the concept that if you watch something you will do what is being showcased right in front of you.

I personally, haven’t watched it ( and I don’t plan to ) but from what I have heard, everyone likes it not only because of the well written story with interesting characters but also due to the suicide question that it talks about. No, but every adult thinks that the teenagers will start getting ideas and jump to train tracks, cut their wrists, shot themselves or whatever, the people don’t understand the art of cinema anymore. If someone does that, it’s not because of what they are watching, it’s because of the person. If someone decides to kill herself, that’s their problem, because they are the ones that have problems regarding to the suicide issue or some other one, if they do that, they are the liability.

Let’s look at the famous GTA game, every time that is released a new one, it’s highly criticised for it’s violent content. Again, it’s people’s fault if they follow that anarchic lifestyle. In addition, what about the numerous movies that depicts violent and distorded themes or even some tv shows. Stop making too big of a deal out of this.

As of right know, New Zealand has prohibited minors to watch it and even some schools in Canada have warned the parents and done something about it’s contact to teenagers. Where is the so called freedom, I don’t care if the content is strong, the people are responsible if they adapt what they see to their reality or not. Although, I can see another one of this problem coming out, since our society has been diminishing more and more, I FEAR FOR HUMANITY !

Now, what do you think about this constant buzz ? Do you share the same opinion of the opression of the content showcased on this show or is this too much controversy ?

  1. I am very skeptical about the series. I want to read the book before watching it. I competely agree with your review. Censorship is definitely NOT the way to go. I can’t comment on how the theme of suicide was depicted but it’s definitely one of the reasons why I will be watching the series. After everybody stops talking about it.

  2. I’ve watched it and I think it is a good show. It certainly kept me hooked until I finished all thirteen episodes.

I do get the concerns regarding it, though, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone do what Hannah did in the show. However, censorship is certainly not the best way to deal with the show and the issue it presents. Talking and teaching are always far better options.
